Newquay Storm delivered a stellar second half performance in this highly anticipated local derby against Bodmin.
Bodmin took control early, turning a lot of possession to go on and win the first quarter. Storm’s shooting partnership of Kirstie Worth and Amelia Gard shot 100% but it wasn’t enough as the visitors took the opening period 13-10.
Bodmin continued where they left off to extend their lead to five partway through the second quarter. Storm, however, finally got into their rhythm, fighting back with intensity and precision to overturn the scoreline and take a narrow two-point lead into halftime.
Heather Scarlett replaced Worth in the shooting circle at half time. The second half was where Storm truly came alive. The defence tightened, turning ball in the circle and midcourt, and the attack flow clicked seamlessly, dominating the third quarter 18-8. With momentum firmly on their side, they continued to build on their lead in the final quarter, outscoring Bodmin 14-10 to seal an impressive 55-39 victory.
Head Coach David White was delighted with the fightback: "I'm incredibly proud of the team today. To face such a strong Bodmin side and respond the way we did is outstanding. The resilience, adaptability, and support they showed each other on court was phenomenal.”
This win is another testament to Storm's exceptional debut season. Currently sitting 3rd in South West 3 as they approach the halfway mark, the team has consistently grown into playing at this level. And today the squad’s ability to respond under pressure and execute their game plan with precision was excellent.
“Sitting 3rd in our first season speaks volumes about the work this team puts in week after week," said White. “More work to do this week though as we have second placed Nova next!”
