The Newquay Storm Way: Our Club Philosophy
Because being part of Newquay Storm is more than just a game!
At Newquay Storm, we're all about unleashing the power of the Orange! Our mission is simple: to build awesome netball teams that not only know how to win but also know how to have a blast doing it. We're dedicated to nurturing young talent, helping every player shine like a star, and fostering a club where everyone feels like they belong to one big, slightly wild, and definitely passionate family.
We're serious about providing top-notch coaching that helps you grow and improve your game. But just as importantly, we're building a culture where the roar of Newquay Storm is felt by everyone – a place where you understand your role in our epic journey.
Being a Newquay Storm player means knowing what to expect, from trials, to pre-season to the final whistle of the season. It also means being ready to put your team first and embrace the commitment that comes with wearing the Orange.
And here's a non-negotiable: whether you're a player, coach, umpire, volunteer, or the loudest supporter on the side of the court, we expect you to bring the positivity, loudly encourage the girls and help us create a safe, supportive, and positively buzzing environment. Our Club Codes of Conduct are there to help us all make that happen.
Becoming part of the Orange Family: Our Selection Policy
We believe everyone deserves a real shot at showing us what they've got and earning their place in the Orange dress. Our selectors will be working hard to see you in the positions you're keen on. Just a heads-up: while we'll do our best, sometimes juggling positions at trials isn't always possible every time. Also, court time is earned, not guaranteed to be equal for everyone – we're building the best team for the job!
When we're making those tough (but exciting!) selection decisions, here's what will be swirling in our selectors' minds:
Demonstrated Skills and Technique: Your proficiency in the specific netball skills required for each position you're interested in.
Teamwork and Collaboration: Your ability to work effectively with other players and contribute to a positive team dynamic.
Understanding and Embodying Club Values: How well you demonstrate the core values and important qualities of Newquay Storm.
Alignment with Club Goals: How your aspirations and commitment align with the overall objectives and direction of Newquay Storm.
Adherence to the Code of Conduct: Your understanding and consistent adherence to the Newquay Storm Code of Conduct.
Attendance and Commitment: Your record of attendance and your overall commitment to Newquay Storm.
Past Performance and Potential: Your performance history and the potential we see for your future development within the club.
Every player will be given a fair assessment, and if we think you're a fantastic fit, you could be pulling on that iconic Orange dress as part of a Newquay Storm team based on your abilities. For our returning players, your previous dedication to training and matches will also be a factor. Our selectors will be operating with the understanding that if we offer you a spot, you'll be as excited as we are and ready to dive in!
What Makes a Storm Player? Our Selection Criteria
(The secret ingredients to our Orange magic!)
We're on the lookout for players who spark with potential in these key areas:
Technical & Tactical Wizardry:
You've got the fundamental netball skills down and can whip them out consistently on the court.
You can nail those specific skills for your chosen position like a true pro (check out below for the nitty-gritty!).
You've got that "game brain" – a solid understanding of tactics and the flow of the game.
Bonus points if you're a versatile player who can rock it in multiple positions and show us your strengths in each!
Physical Powerhouse:
You've got the stamina to keep the energy high throughout the entire game, matching the level of play.
You’re not only a high intensity player, but also a tenacious one!
Quick off the mark, super speedy through court! We like to play “High Risk, High Reward” Netball!
Mental Muscle:
You can shake off a setback and adapt to whatever the game throws your way – we call that being resilient and adaptable.
You can stay focused and strong under pressure, finding clever ways to outsmart the opposition.
Behavioural Brilliance:
You're coachable and have a "bring it on!" attitude towards learning and improvement.
You consistently show that you get and live by the Newquay Storm club values.
You’re a great team-mate! This is one of the most important things we’re looking for.
Understanding Different Roles on the Court:
In netball, different positions have different responsibilities, and at Newquay Storm, we value players who can excel in their chosen roles. In Defence, our players are key to stopping the other team from scoring. This means working hard to restrict their shooting opportunities, make it tough for them to get the ball into their shooting circle, and winning back possession through intercepts and rebounds.
In the Centre Court, players are the engine room of the team! They're responsible for delivering effective centre passes to get our attack going. They need to be able to support both our defensive and attacking players, move the ball effectively through the court, maintain possession, the Centre and Wing Attack are almost telepathic when combining to create opportunities for our shooters. High fitness levels will be required to play our high intensity centre court game.
Finally, in the Shooting circle, the focus is on putting points on the board! Our circle players need to be accurate shooters and be available in and around the shooting circle. They work closely with the Wing Attack and Centre, to enable accurate feeds into the circle but our shooters need to be smart and creative to confuse the defence and set up scoring chances for each other. They are mentally tough, resilient and have ice running through their veins when under the post! (Ok, not literally!).
We encourage players to explore different positions, and during selections, we'll be looking at how well you understand and can perform the key roles for the positions you're interested in.
Expectations for Squad Members
Once the team announcements are made, and you're officially part of a Newquay Storm squad, here are a few key things we expect to ensure our teams run like well-oiled, Orange machines:
The Newquay Storm DNA: Our Important Qualities
What it means to wear the Orange with pride!
At Newquay Storm, we believe that success on and off the court is built on these fundamental qualities:
Mutual Respect: We expect everyone to show respect for the training process, matches, officials, and, crucially, to trust in themselves and their teammates. Respect is the foundation of our Orange family.
Orange Pride: Wear that Orange dress with pride! We value players who take pride in their performance and in being part of the Newquay Storm squad and club. Your positive attitude sets the standard for everyone.
Resilience: This Storm can weather any challenge! We look for players who can bounce back from setbacks during games and training. Your ability to handle tough situations strengthens the entire team as we work towards our goals.
Ready to learn and grow: Be a sponge for knowledge! We value players who are open to feedback and respond constructively. This willingness to learn and grow is essential for both individual and team development within our dynamic environment.
Dedication: Your dedication fuels our Storm! We expect commitment to training, matches, personal development as a player, and to Newquay Storm as a whole. Embrace being part of the squad and make the most of every opportunity.
Own your game: Take responsibility for your actions, both on and off the court, and actively seek ways to improve. Our coaches are always ready to support your growth through open communication.
Support your team-mates: Be the backbone of our Storm! Support each other, foster a positive and encouraging atmosphere, and always be a team player. We also encourage you to rally behind club fundraising events and cheer on your fellow Newquay Storm teams.
Be There, Be Orange: We expect all squad members to attend training sessions and matches. We get that life happens, and sometimes exceptions are needed – just have a chat with your Coach. But remember, if your availability becomes a concern, the Coaches/Selectors will need to consider this and address it according to the Newquay Storm attendance policy.
Get Involved: Don’t be a wallflower at training, hiding at the back hoping you don’t get chosen to demo something or try a new skill! We’re all in it together, embrace it, push your teammates to be better and they will do the same for you.
Love Your Kit! We have a saying at Newquay Storm: "The badge never touches the floor." This is our way of reminding everyone to take real pride in wearing our Newquay Storm kit. It means treating your kit with respect, even when you're taking it off before a game or at training. Instead of just dropping it on the ground, we encourage you to look after it. It represents our team and our club, and we want everyone to wear it with pride!
These attributes are the heart of what makes Newquay Storm special. They define how we play, how we support each other, and how we represent the Orange!
Important Note on Total Club Commitment
To make sure everyone is 100% dedicated to the Newquay Storm family, we won't be selecting any players who are planning to be registered with another netball club in Cornwall at the same time, at any level. We believe this could create a clash of loyalties that wouldn't be in the best interest of Newquay Storm.
