Bideford College, Saturday 12th October
Newquay Storm continued to show their potential in the Netball South West Regional League 3 (South) with a thrilling 40-40 draw against Carol Anne Diamonds in a roller-coaster encounter at Bideford College. In their first season at this level, Storm are starting to find their rhythm and this performance marks another step forward.
After a narrow loss last time out to the league leaders, CCNC Lions, Newquay Storm came into this game determined to put in a strong showing against North Devon side Diamonds, who started the day in fourth place. The match started evenly, with both teams trading blows in the first quarter, which ended all square at 11-11.
Storm began to find their groove in the second quarter, pulling ahead by six at half-time. Goal Shooter Heather Scarlett and Goal Attack Amelia Gard combining well to give the visitors a deserved lead. The defensive pairing of captain Lydia Gard and Rosie White worked tirelessly to contain Diamonds' attack, while Aimee Thompsonโs energy in the centre kept Storm on the front foot.
The third quarter saw Diamonds claw their way back into the contest, narrowing the gap to just three goals as Newquay Storm faced increasing pressure. The game became more physical, with both sides battling hard for every ball. Despite the intensity, Storm kept their composure, with Wing Defence Tamsyn Hall and Wing Attack Hannah Hautot providing vital support through the court.
In the final quarter, coach David White made changes, bringing Kerenza Hall off the bench to replace Amelia Gard. Gard then returned later in the quarter to replace Scarlett. The tactical shifts helped Storm stay in the game as the Diamonds mounted a late surge to lead by three. Storm eventually drew level in the final minutes. Both teams had chances to win it, but the game ended in a well-deserved 40-40 draw.
Head Coach David White was full of praise for his teamโs effort: โWe showed great character today. To come away with a draw against a team as strong as Diamonds is a big positive. The girls are really starting to find their feet at this level.โ
